First opened as the Samburu-Isiolo Game Reserve in 1948, the Reserve is the rugged, covered in volcanic plains, swamps, rocky outcrops, small rivers and isolated inselbergs.
Samburu is arid and sandy, making it a tough area for wildlife to live in Samburu is one of the few sanctuaries in Kenya that is home – the Beia oryx, Somali ostrich, Masai Ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, leopard, cheetah and lion. The aardwolf has been spotted on several lucky occasions. The more common reptiles are seen relatively easily such as the “tree agama” pictured above.
Adjoining the reserve more or less as an extension of the same environment is the Buffalo springs national reserve – 130 square kilomteres of rolling lowland and plains interspersed by seasonal dry luggas and the ewaso nyiro river on its northern boundary
Shaba National Reserve lie , this third reserve of the ntegra complex was home to the late Joy Adamson who did her word of rehabilitating the leopard to the wilderness there. The resrve covers the lava plain with rdiges dominated by Shaba Massit
The Northern Frontier is near Samburu and a rewarding addition to safaris here – but be warned that this is for the more diehard ntegrat seeking the remoteness that guarantees no other tourists! Through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve, the property also incorporates lower lying scenic foothills and arid habitats of high biodiversity, situated in the ecological transition zone between the mountain ecosystem and the semi-arid savanna grasslands.
